On Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that in a first for state law regulates how social media companies can moderate online speech.
Under the Stop Social Media Censorship Act which experts have already pointed out is likely unenforceable, given that it violates Section 230 Communications Decency Act and, arguably, the First Amendment social media sites will be fined $250,000 for every day more than two weeks that a statewide political candidate is banned. The fine is $25,000 per day for sites banning candidates running for other positions. The protection is in place from a candidate’s day of qualification until the day of the election or when a candidate ends their run. It applies to users whose candidacy can ....

Crucial for active managers to engage on ESG

Terrence Murphy, chief executive of ClearBridge, said: “ In a year like no other, the global pandemic starkly highlighted the social and economic inequalities in our society. At the same time, it reinforced the value of our decades-long efforts to prioritise ESG factors in our investment approach”.
In the infrastructure space, Shane Hurst, portfolio manager of global infrastructure strategies, said ESG was “vital” for the asset class and there had been a tilt towards managing stakeholder interests.
“ESG has always been vital for infrastructure as an asset class. The need to lower carbon emissions is not going away, nor is the importance of upgrading and building new infrastructure to achieve lower emissions targets. And part of the world’s response to the pandemic, the urgency of balancing stakeholder’s interests in business operations is a positive for the infrastructure sector,” he said.  ....

Last week, Virginia Thomas, a conservative activist, sent an email blast to friends and associates asking them to join an influence network to raise awareness for a new website fighting corporate tyranny” and social media’s growing power over political speech.
Five days later, in a concurring opinion for a Supreme Court ruling pertaining to Twitter and former President Donald Trump, her husband, Justice Clarence Thomas, issued a similar warning about America s social media giants. The unprecedented control of so much speech in the hands of a few private parties would soon force the court to address how the law handled the major platforms, he wrote. The threat to free speech was a glaring concern. ....

Social Media Bias Just Got Even More Orwellian

AP Photo/Jeff Roberson, File)
A study by the New York University Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, titled “False Allegation: The Unfounded Claim that Social Media Censors Conservatives,” is downright chilling and it tells you everything you need to know about the dishonesty of those who purport to be arbiters of truth in modern American society.
The researchers didn’t waste any time getting to the crux of their preposterous charges. The report declares at the outset: “The claim of anti-conservative animus is itself a form of disinformation: a falsehood with no reliable evidence to support it. No trustworthy largescale studies have determined that conservative content is being removed for ideological reasons or that searches are being manipulated to favor liberal interests.” ....
