88,000 New York City Voters Shifted from Republican or Independent to Democratic Party Ahead of Primary

The Democratic Party in New York has consistently grown its voter base over the years and has also drawn previously party-unaffiliated and Republican voters to its ranks. In the last year alone, more than 88,000 voters who either had no party registration (“independents”) or were registered with the Republican Party switched their affiliation to the Democrats, potentially creating a new bloc of voters that candidates may seek to woo in races such as the crowded and competitive primary contest to replace term-limited Mayor Bill de Blasio.
According to data from the state voter file analyzed by Prime New York, a political consulting firm, 67,965 unaffiliated voters and 20,528 Republicans joined the Democratic Party, for a total of 88,493 new Democrats. ....

NYUJ Executive Director Alexander Horwitz says a 76% recidivism rate in local prisons is due to largely to ‘technical parole violations’ -not new crimes. These are things such as violating ruleas about where someone can live, who they can associate with, and other parole rules. A Black person compared to a White person out on parole, Horwitz adds, is 12 times more likely to be sent back to jail.
“The racial disparities are absolutely obvious. You take all of this together and what it means is it is time for New York to act. It is time for wholesale and complete parole reform that will root out the racism in this system.” ....

"Broken" parole system cost Erie County taxpayers millions, says watchdog group

The cost accounts for the county’s Holding Center in downtown Buffalo and its Correctional Facility in Alden.
On average, individuals spend 100 days in jail for parole violations while they go through court hearings. But more than just the monetary cost behind that time, it’s the human cost that Peaceprints Western New York Executive Director Cindi McEachon, sees as most detrimental.
“If you are removing somebody from their family, from their community, from their job, from their home,” she said. “And placing them in jail for 100 days because you have the discretionary authority to do so, and then we find out you don’t have enough to hold them and you let them back out, you have disrupted their opportunities for growth, for success, for maintaining their lifestyle in the community.” ....
