Winter Reading Challenge: Books Like Us
Jan. 1-Feb. 20. Billerica Public Library invites residents to join us and participate in Beanstack’s Annual Winter Reading Challenge, sponsored by Simon & Schuster. Books Like Us encourages readers to picture themselves as part of this wonderful journey of reading!
We’ll be challenging you to read at least 600 minutes during the month of January (that’s about 20 minutes per day) and track that time in Beanstack. You can pre-register for the challenge and learn more here: http://billericalibrary.beanstack.org/reader365
Join the Billerica Public Library for our Gratitude Call In Program! Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9 a.m., call in to share something you are grateful for in a welcoming, friendly space. Listening to other callers share what they are grateful for is an uplifting way to start your day! This program will take place completely over the phone. We hope you join us! Please reach out to librarians Lizzie Meier at 978-294-9493 or Sharon Lomison at 978-294-9783 for more information or to register over the phone. Once you register for this program, we will send you the information you will need to make the call. You can also register online at billericalibrary.org/events.

The ceremonial arch at Cleveland's African-American Cultural Garden was dedicated in 2016. Cleveland architect Daniel Bickerstaff intended it as the first phase of a larger project. The angled black walls below the arch represent the "Door of No Return" at Elmina Castle in Ghana, through which enslaved Africans passed before the Middle Passage to New World colonies. Steven Litt

Local libraries participate in national reading challenge

Local libraries participate in national reading challenge
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Middle Georgia Regional Libraries are participating in the Winter Reading Challenge.
This is the first year that Simon and Shuster’s
Books Like US will sponsor the challenge.
Three Bibb County libraries will participate: Washington Memorial, Shurling, and Bloomfield Libraries.
The Washington Memorial Library has set a goal to read at least 10 hours in January. Marketing Coordinator Sylvia O’bear says the library will participate because it likes what Books Like Us stands for.
“We’re getting people to see characters that look like them, that tell their stories that relate to them, that they can see themselves,” O’bear said.

A Guide to Seattle's Independent Bookstores

Pioneer Square’s Arundel Books is affiliated with the small press Chatwin Books. Currently, Arundel sits in a proper brick building and abounds with new, used, and rare books, many of which you need to get on a ladder to reach. In January, it moves to a new location.
Online and in-store
This shop is a Pioneer Square mainstay for new and used books. As of January 31, 2021, though, it will move to a new spot on University Way NE. In the interim, the Pioneer Square location is open, or you can order by email at [email protected].
