ROZs in Pakistan, Afghanistan to bring political stability: US senator

ISLAMABAD: Democratic US Senator Chris Van Hollen has said the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Pakistan and Afghanistan border regions will help usher in political stability and block the way for elements like al-Qaeda and ISIS after US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Karachi born Senator Van Hollen said so in virtual conference on the Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act with the Pakistani and US journalists which was hosted by Pak origin Democratic leader Tahir Javed. Itâs a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senator Van Hollen and other members of US congress.
In response to another question, the Senator said that the bill does not aim to displace CPEC and in fact he had proposed this bill way back around 15 years back. He said he and colleagues have revived the effort to introduce these incentives to business in Pakistan and Afghanistan to promote employment and business activity to limit the likely chaos after US exit. ....

After an extensive policy review, the Biden Administration has begun the process of withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan.
Pakistan had hoped that the conclusion of the endgame might alter the principal lens through which the US has viewed the region for the past two decades, and therein its relationship with Pakistan. But, despite a clearly signalled desire by Islamabad for a broadened and diversified Pak-US bilateral relationship, the Biden Administration has yet to respond positively. This has resulted in several notable omissions that have not played out well in Islamabad.
Why has the Biden Administration been distinctly reserved regarding Pakistan? There are at least three possible explanations. Three US Senators have introduced the Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act to establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Afghanistan-Pakistan border regions to allow certain products from these areas to enter US duty-free.
The (US) President will determine which products, from a specified list of textile and apparel goods, will be eligible for duty-free treatment. These products represent a range of goods commonly imported to the US from Pakistan and Afghanistan, says the bill introduced in the Senate.
The ROZs will generate greater economic opportunity for the people in the war-torn areas and lay the groundwork for a more stable region, said the Senators Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat; Todd Young, an Indiana Republican; and Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat. ....

Bipartisan US Bill promise economic benefits to Pakistan and Afghanistan

Pak-US Business Council Sunday said a bipartisan bill moved in the US Senate on Friday to establish duty free export zones along Pak-Afghan border, will promise economic benefits to both countries and boost US efforts to promote peace in the region. Lauding the move in the US Senate, founder chairman Pak US Business Council and President SAARC chamber Iftikhar Ali Malik said the bill would establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones ( ROZs) in Pakistan and Afghanistan’s border regions to allow certain products from these areas to enter the US duty free. He said bill would generate economic opportunities for the people of these war torn areas and lay the groundwork for a more stable region. He said ROZs would export textiles and apparel goods to the United States without paying duties.He said the US goods trade deficit with Pakistan , a 56th largest trade partner is $1.3 billion in 2019 while two way goods trade is $6.6 billion in same period which ....

US senators introduce bill for duty-free economic zones along Pak-Afghan border

WASHINGTON/ LAHORE: US senators have introduced a bipartisan bill to promote and generate economic benefits for Pakistan and Afghanistan by establishing Reconstruction Opportunity Zones along Afghanistan and Pakistan border.
The bill is called the ‘Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act’. The legislation proposes the set up of a reconstruction opportunity zones along Pak-Afghan border areas. “The bill would establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s border regions to allow certain products from these areas to enter the US duty-free,” a statement read.
The bipartisan bill was introduced by Democrat Senators Van Hollen, Maria Cantwell and Republican Senator Todd Young. The outlined objectives of the say that fostering trade with the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region will help bolster economic development and improve the livelihoods of local populations. ....
