Jewell was the main man who jump-started poultry raising and processing, starting on a small scale until expanding into a company whose name and reputation were familiar worldwide. But, Hall County thought of itself as a center for poultry raising many decades earlier. Chicken farmers all over North Georgia loaded their wagons and hauled poultry and produce over the mountains into Gainesville, where merchants and residents were their eager customers. ....
This week, officials with the City of Hazard have been working on repairing several waterline breaks that resulted in the loss of water to multiple areas of Hazard and Perry County. On Dec. 30, a certificate of emergency was declared by the city. Tony Eversole, as the acting city manager of Hazard, signed a certificate of emergency stating that the City of Hazard was under an emergency condition involving the supply of water to its customers both inside and outside the city due to severe weather conditions experienced in the past weeks which caused multiple serious waterline breaks and the serious loss of water storage capacity in all parts of the system. This shortage, said the certificate, threatens disruption of service to residential, commercial and industrial customers in various parts of the system. It was the second damaging fire the Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District had to tame in two days. Another fire on Wednesday damaged a home on Pigeon Roost Road. Paint Creek received a call reporting the Thursday fire at 246 and 246 1/2 E. South St. at 11:41 a.m. Paint Creek Lt. Branden Jackman said that upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the structure. ....
