Karen E. Knudsen, M.B.A., Ph.D., will become the first female chief executive officer (CEO) in the 107-year history of the American Cancer Society (ACS). She will be the first scientific and oncology researcher to serve in the top staff position in the modern era.
Knudsen also will become CEO of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), its advocacy affiliate, effective June 1. She will succeed Gary Reedy, who is retiring and has served as both organizations’ CEO since 2015.
The hiring of a female CEO signals a new era for ACS, where all of its past top leaders were men, even though its Women’s Field Army was credited for building what became the modern American Cancer Society, according to an ACS announcement. ....

WASHINGTON By a vote of 220-211, the House on Wednesday passed the Senate version of the COVID relief bill also known as the American Rescue Plan Act paving the way for President Biden s signature.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Oregon will soon have the sixth-highest cigarette tax in the nation when increased tobacco taxes take effect in the new year.
Voters passed Measure 108 by an overwhelming margin in November with 66% of Oregonians voting yes.
Starting Jan. 1, cigarette taxes will go up $2 per pack, and for the first time, there will be a tax on e-cigarettes and vaping products. Merchants will see a 65% increase on their wholesale price.
Oregon Vape Society owner Eric Pinnell said customers won’t see that high of a mark-up on his store shelves when all is said and done. ....
