Covid-19 cases remain above 4,000 a day

FOR the sixth day in a row, the Department of Health (DOH) reported more than 4,000 coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in a single day.
In its case bulletin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2021, DOH listed 4,387 new cases, the lowest in six days.
The daily positivity rate, however, jumped to 14.1 percent as more people were tested for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.
Of the 37,608 samples tested as of 12 noon of March 16, 5,321 were found positive for the virus.
The new cases brought the cumulative case count in the Philippines to 635,698 and pushed the number of active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities to 61,733, the highest since the 63,066 on September 26, 2020. ....

China-backed group loses $10bn Philippine airport project

A China-backed consortium has lost the right to develop a $10 billion airport project in the Philippines, the group s local partner said on Wednesday.
MacroAsia, the Philippine partner of state-owned China Communications Construction Co., told the Philippine Stock Exchange that the Cavite provincial government had canceled the notice of award it granted to the consortium last year.
The airport is one of the high-profile projects supported by Chinese companies that have clinched infrastructure projects in the Philippines since President Rodrigo Duterte embraced China as an economic partner in 2016. ....
