Quang Nam develops sustainable sea, island tourism | Travel

Quang Nam (VNA) – The central coastal province of Quang Nam has focused resources on upgrading
tourism infrastructure as the locality is looking to develop sustainable
It has established tourism as a spearhead economic sector, with a goal of attracting over 12 million visitors, half of them coming from overseas.
Tourism currently makes up over 5 percent of the province s GRDP and has created 30,000 jobs. By 2030, Quang Nam’s tourism sector will hopefully be the region’s spearhead economic sector, making up 7-8 percent of its GRDP and creating over 50,000 jobs. ....

This is the final installment of an interview that historian Joe Todd did with Vietnam veteran Larry Seigel on Nov. 18, 2020, in Bartlesville. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
(The interview continues with Seigel based Phuoc Vin Base Camp in southern Vietnam.)
Todd: Did you have any rocket or mortar attacks at Phuoc Vinh?
Seigel: All the time. We were rear echelon; except for walking through the jungle, it was the same as being front line because you never knew when you were going to be hit.
T: Why did the Cav move to Phuoc Vinh? ....

MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Cu Chi Tunnels on path of becoming world treasure

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City is working on a dossier seeking UNESCO’s recognition for the tunnels.
Located in Tan Phu Trung and Phuoc Vinh An communes in Cu Chi district, about 70km from downtown HCM City, the tunnels were built by local residents and soldiers using simple tools from 1946 to 1968 as shelters from US and Saigon troops during the war.
Initially, they dug only short sections with simple structure to hide documents, weapons and resistance members. The tunnels were gradually connected and extended into a system which by 1965 had a combined length of about 200km of underground trenches arranged in three floors. The deepest floor is about 8-12 metres under the ground. ....

Infantry platoon leader recalls best and worst of times


Robin Bartlett still gets choked up when he recalls how his parents met him at Travis Air Force Base, California, when the young infantry officer returned in 1969 after a year in Vietnam.
The other Soldiers on the plane wondered how his parents knew the arrival time and date because they were the only family members there. But the parents of 1st Lt. Robin Bartlett had some pull. His father, Air Force Col. LeRoy Bartlett Jr., and mother, Marjorie Johns-Bartlett, resided in California and they knew their youngest son would return sometime around May 7-9.
“And my father and mother met every arriving flight from Vietnam from about May 7-9,” Bartlett said with his voice cracking. “And when my plane landed at 11 o’clock at night (May 9), I looked out the window and I saw two people standing on the other side of the fence at the terminal. And I knew it was my parents.” ....
