Flower industry calls for more biosecurity investment amid cut-flower import fears

The Australian flower industry s peak body is calling on the federal government to invest more money to protect growers from biosecurity threats.
A $371 million biosecurity package was announced yesterday ahead of next week s Budget, which included funding for freight container inspections, the management of international mail, research into how pests are entering the country and a public awareness campaign.
But Flower Industry Australia chief executive Anna Jabour welcomed the announcement, but she had hoped some money from this package would go towards better inspections of cut flower imports. ....

Florists are calling for compensation after they were left holding millions of dollars worth of unsold flowers when Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews effectively shut down Valentine’s Day, their most profitable day of the year.
Mr Andrews admitted he hadn’t considered the $36 million worth of flowers sold on Valentine’s Day each year in the state when he imposed Victoria’s snap five-day lockdown on Friday – and the florists of Victoria are not impressed.

Hotels flee quarantine program over brand damage

Top hotels are pulling out of the quarantine program amid growing industry fears that the spate of recent coronavirus outbreaks leaking out via staff is causing reputational damage to operators.
At least a dozen hotels have withdrawn from the program, including Sydney’s Five Star Hilton and InterContinental hotels, and Melbourne’s Marriott, sparking warnings an assistance package may be needed to help the sector rehabilitate its image.
As some states and epidemiologists ramp up calls for quarantine centres to be established in regional areas, Accommodation Association chief Dean Long said it was “disrespectful” that Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and others tarred hotels by attaching their name to specific clusters. ....

Coming up roses: business begins to bloom after Australian flower industry hit by pandemic


The Flower Industry Australia chief executive, Anna Jabour, estimates that, pre-Covid, 10m red roses were imported into Australia every Valentine’s Day. This year, however, she says, things are different.
“What I’ve heard from every rose grower I’ve spoken to is that they’re run off their feet,” she says. “It’s really brilliant to hear.”
When contacted by Guardian Australia, a rose grower and florist in the Sydney suburb of Dural said: “We are flat out doing orders for Valentine’s Day.”
However Jabour says “the impact of Covid on the local growers industry is different for everyone”. ....
