Make room, Georgetown. Indigenous studies needs a place in the academy.

Only 26 Georgetown students are taking a class on Indigenous people this semester. Of the over 6,000 undergraduates attending Georgetown, that’s only four thousandths of a percent.
That’s how many students are enrolled in PHIL 156, Intro to Indigenous Philosophy, the lone three-credit course on Indigeneity being offered this semester. Sure, other professors could bring in discussions about Indigenous people into their curriculum but they aren’t required to. And if a student is hoping to go to some department-sponsored events and learn on their own time, that might be a bit challenging as Georgetown has no formal Native or Indigenous studies program.  ....

Senate bill aims to ditch Columbus Day

The deeds of a long-dead Italian explorer have been celebrated in the U.S. for over 80 years.
But in Montana, Senate Bill 146 aims to remove Columbus Day from the docket of state holidays and replace it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Seven other states — Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, South Dakota, Vermont and Oregon — have already replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, while Alabama and Oklahoma celebrate both holidays.

Morigeau brought forth a similar bill in 2019, but it was killed in the Senate’s State Administration Committee. As of Monday, Feb. 15, SB 146 was in that very same committee.  ....

Native American woman rose from poverty to become a doctor | News, Sports, Jobs

Green Bay Press-Gazette
BARABOO, Wis. Born to teenage parents who divorced when she was 10 and watching her mom struggle to overcome poverty and alcoholism, Dr. Amy DeLong had long battled self-doubt to find a place in this world.
She is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and had felt, at first, that the only reason why she was able to attend the University of Michigan for her undergraduate studies was because of that institution’s efforts to draw more ethnic minorities.
“I didn’t know if I was smart enough,” said DeLong, 51. “In the beginning, I felt like I didn’t belong. … I felt like, ‘I’m only here because I’m American Indian. ” ....
