In this episode, we learned navigating consent as a Parent/Caregiver. The conversation was moderated by Deanna Moore from Sitkans Against Family Violence, and the panelists were Lauren Havens, former School Program Coordinator, SAFV, and Darby Osborne, Sitka High School, Peer Educator for Healthy Relationships. Hosted by Becky Meiers, and produced by Peter Vu, Talk of Southeast Alaska is one of the results of 2019’s Translatorpalooza tour. We developed this show as a result of our meetings with listeners throughout our broadcast area. Over and over, folks in each community expressed the need to hear from each other they wanted to hear how people throughout our region were dealing with the issues they were dealing with. They wanted to hear stories from other folks in small communities along the coast. ....

(Photo by Becky Meiers/KCAW) Students in the Kupreanof Island village of Kake will resume in-person learning for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The Kake City School Board announced this week that the district will adopt a mixture of in-person and remote learning starting February 8, barring any new active cases in the community. Students who want to remain fully remote still have the option. Kake City School District Superintendent Rich Catahay says the teachers are excited to have students back in the building, participating in hands-on activities. ....

The updated policy restricts chokeholds and emphasizes de-escalating potentially violent confrontations. The Yakutat Police Department’s updated policy defines chokeholds as deadly force. And it instructs officers to give a verbal warning before using force that could injure someone. If they don’t, they’re required to document why they didn’t. These guidelines are part of a new, publicly available police operations manual that hadn’t been updated since 2007. Use of force policies have only recently received public scrutiny after police departments across the nation began publishing their use of force policies. ....
