Virginia Democratic governor primary tomorrow, both parties hold local election primaries

The Democratic Party of Virginia is holding its primary for governor and other statewide races June 8 and both parties are holding primaries for some House of Delegates races and other local races.
Virginia’s governor’s race will be an open-seat election between businessman Glenn Youngkin on the Republican ticket and the Democratic nominee chosen Tuesday. Current Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam cannot seek reelection per state law, which prohibits a governor from serving two consecutive terms.
Youngkin was chosen through a convention process last month after the Republican Party opted against a statewide primary. The Democratic Party is choosing its nominee through a more conventional primary method with the current frontrunner being former Gov. Terry McAullife. ....

In 2017, more than 30 prominent African American women wrote an open letter to then-Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, calling out the party for taking Black women’s political activism and leadership for granted. 
“We have shown how Black women lead, yet the Party’s leadership from Washington to the state parties have few or no Black women in leadership, the letter said. More and more, Black women are running for office and winning elections – with scant support from Democratic Party infrastructure. ....

Can Virginia Be the First State in History to Elect a Black Woman Governor?


While eight women currently serve as governors in the mainland United States (plus one in the territory of Guam), there’s never been a Black woman governor, ever, in the country. 
In Virginia, three Black women are among those running for governor in the June 8 Primary Election, seeking to ascend to the Commonwealth’s highest office and potentially make history. Two Democrats Jennifer Carroll Foy and Jennifer McClellan as well as Liberation Party candidate Princess Blanding are in the race. Lt. Governor, Justin Fairfax, the state’s first Black man in that role is also running.
They are joined by Terry McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chair who served as Governor from 2014 to 2018, and Republican Glenn Youngkin, who has been endorsed by former president Donald Trump.  ....
