Structures that grew from 1946 up to the present day. The first were existing buildings constructed years before they housed their first book. That changed in 1977 when the new building was constructed that we still have today. But the buildings themselves are far from the whole story of our public library. In fact, the most interesting part of the story is the people who are the foundation.
Updated: 11:30 AM EDT Apr 19, 2021 Baltimore's annual rite of spring, Flower Mart at Mount Vernon Place, will take place online, the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy announced Monday.The event this year will take place April 30 to May 2, and the conservancy launched a new website for the event, where the vendor marketplace and festival events can be found: mvpconservancy.org.The Flower Mart vendor marketplace is open, featuring 12 florists and farms, 10 craft vendors and 10 food and beverage options.In addition to the vendor marketplace, free online events will be held during the festival weekend, including flower arranging demonstrations, informational sessions on pollinators and topics like "Getting Nerdy with Nature," sponsored by the National Aquarium. Presenters include the Master Gardeners, local flower farmers and local businesses selling plants and flowers.Information about these events can be found on the website, and they will be streamed live on the conservancy's Facebook page dedicated to the event, Flower Mart at Mount Vernon Place, and on the conservancy's YouTube channel.The event will also include Lemon Stick Kits for sale by the conservancy for $8. Each kit includes two lemons, three peppermint sticks, instructions on how to assemble, as well as a seed packet of flowers to plant in a container or home garden. The kits will be sold online for pickup at the Washington Monument on May 1 and 2.Last year, Flower Mart was canceled just weeks before its planned launch because of the emerging COVID-19 pandemic."It was a disappointing, but necessary decision," Lance Humphries, executive director of the conservancy, said in a statement.The conservancy decided that a virtual Flower Mart would keep the tradition alive this year.Flower Mart was founded in 1911 by the Women's Civic League, an organization formed to advocate for better living conditions in Baltimore. A focal point of the original festival was to encourage flower, plant and vegetable gardening in the yards of homes and vacant lots -- thereby making them green.
