'Building feminist peace: what way forward for the EU?' - ACELG - University of Amsterdam, Online

14:00 -15:15
Some EU member states - such as Sweden and France - have declared to pursue a Feminist Foreign Policy. In June 2020, the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy released a report, commissioned by the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament, in which it argued for “A Feminist Foreign Policy for the European Union”. Among other things, such a Feminist Foreign Policy calls for disarmament, reversing militarisation, and prioritising human security. While in fact, the EU’s latest Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security is more ambitious than previous proposals, EU leaders are also moving towards a more military approach when it comes to security and development objectives. For example, the new European Peace Facility allows the EU to deliver and finance arms for third countries. ....

Global civil society statement on Myanmar - Myanmar

Global civil society statement on Myanmar
Format
We, the undersigned organizations, call on the United Nations Security Council to urgently impose a comprehensive global arms embargo on Myanmar to help prevent further violations of human rights against peaceful protesters and others opposing military rule. In recent weeks, Myanmar security forces have killed hundreds of people, including dozens of children, merely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
Since the February 1, 2021 coup, Myanmar’s military junta has responded with increasing brutality to nationwide protests calling for the restoration of democratic civilian rule. As of May 4, security forces have killed at least 769 people, including 51 children as young as 6, and arbitrarily detained several thousand activists, journalists, civil servants, and politicians. Hundreds have been forcibly disappeared, the authorities unwilling to provide information on their well-being o ....

Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the country have halted or downscaled activities weeks after the government suspended operations of the Democratic Governance Facility (DGF).
A number have temporarily stopped staff from working while others have introduced a shift model for employees to reduce costs.
The most affected civil society organisation (CSOs) include those engaged in accountability, human rights and good governance, democracy, service delivery monitoring and capacity-building at national, regional and grassroots level.

Finance minister Matia Kasaija froze DGF operations on February 17 on orders of President Museveni, who on February 2, argued that more than Shs500b donor-bankrolled kitty required government oversight. ....

OSCE roundtable on women's leadership in peacebuilding and conflict prevention: UK contribution

8 March 2021 (Speaker s notes, may differ from delivered version)
Why is it important to have more women in leadership positions in conflict prevention and peacebuilding?
Five main reasons:
(a) The starting point is very low – between 1990 and 2017, in all major peace processes - women made up only 2% of mediators; 8% of negotiators and 5% of witnesses and signatures. Barriers include assumptions that, as women are often not direct combatants, their role in cessation of hostilities is limited. But there are serious myths which need puncturing – chief amongst them that: there are not enough qualified women to participate in peace processes (which is wrong); and that peace processes should not take into account informal power structures in communities (which is also wrong). ....
