Tom Crist, professor and chair of biology, and James Kiper, professor of computer science and software engineering, have been honored with the 2021 Benjamin Harrison Medallion. Named for America’s 23
rd president who graduated from Miami in 1852, the medallion is Miami University’s most prestigious career faculty honor and recognizes “contribution to the education of the nation.”
Beyond their nationally and internationally recognized research and commitment to teaching, each has served as department chair and in other university leadership roles. They are noted by their colleagues for their calm, collaborative leadership styles.  ....

UF professor Tao Li retires amid investigation of grad student's death


A computer engineering professor is resigning from the University of Florida amid the university s investigation into the 2019 suicide of one of his graduate students, Huixiang Chen.
Tao Li s last day is May 15, according to documents in his personnel file received by The Sun. He was first hired at UF as an assistant professor in 2004 and has been on paid administrative leave since Feb. 15.
Li s resignation letter was sent April 10 and accepted April 13, and he will remain on leave until his last day, said Hessy Fernandez, a UF spokeswoman. He is paid $153,239 annually by the university.
The four-sentence-long notice  including Li s signature   does not mention Chen s death or the ongoing investigation but merely states his end date and wishes all the best to the UF Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. ....

A GRATEFUL dad has raised thousands of pounds on a 47-mile charity trek for the hospital which saved the lives of his wife and premature daughter.
John Keeble, 35, of Great Totham, decided to raise money for the Rosie Hospital, in Cambridge, by walking from Addenbrooke’s Hospital there back to his home.
John and wife Kelly, 35, were hoping to welcome their daughter Olivia into the world in the summer of 2020.
But almost a month after the initial lockdown, Kelly suffered a complications during her 25th week of pregnancy, losing 3.5 litres of blood.
Thanks to the efforts of maternity staff, Kelly was safe and little Olivia was born on April 14. ....
