California company pitches Pendleton on electric scooters

PENDLETON — A Los Angeles-area company has been pitching small-town America on adopting its electric scooter program, and Pendleton is its next target.
At a Tuesday, March 9, workshop, Michael Covato of Bird, a Santa Monica, California, “micromobility” company, fielded numerous questions from the Pendleton City Council as it prepares to vote on an ordinance allowing Bird’s scooters on city streets and the Pendleton River Parkway.
While Bird has been in large metro areas for years, Covato told the council that the company has been looking to expand its presence across the globe. He said one of the reasons Bird was interested in Pendleton was because of its demographics and its “phenomenal grid structure” in the city’s core. ....

Pendleton housing market hits extreme seller's market, while Hermiston invests in infrastructure to spur new housing

PENDLETON — When the Umatilla River floods hit Pendleton in 2020, hundreds of residents were rendered temporarily homeless.
The Oregon Legislature eventually stepped in to provide millions of dollars worth of rapid rehousing money to organizations like the Community Action Program of East Central Oregon to help displaced residents find a new place to live.
But the nonprofit struggled to find homes for the flood survivors in Pendleton’s existing housing market, according to CAPECO Chief Executive Officer Paula Hall. There were few housing options on the market, and even available homes were often unaffordable for the displaced residents, many of whom came from Riverview Mobile Home Estates. Kate Gonsalves, a senior communications coordinator with Oregon Housing & Community Services, said the rapid rehousing money was soon repurposed for a different Pendleton housing project. ....

Pendleton looks to cut off public records access from drone range

SALEM — It could soon get a lot harder to access public records from the Pendleton Unmanned Aerial Systems Range.
State Sen. Bill Hansell, R-Athena, has introduced a bill that would exempt the city of Pendleton from disclosing records produced by the test range if making them public “would cause a competitive disadvantage to the test range or its users.” The exemption covers a broad range of records, “including but not limited to pricing, intellectual property and customer records.”
At a Feb. 11 Senate Committee on Labor and Business hearing, Pendleton City Manager Robb Corbett called passage of the bill “crucial” before introducing Steve Chrisman, the city’s airport manager and economic development director. ....

Restaurants glad to open doors to customers

PENDLETON — Ever since local businesses shut down in the state-mandated “freeze” back in November, Rodney Burt, the co-owner of OMG Burgers & Brew in Pendleton, estimates that heating his outdoor seating area has cost about $40 in propane each day. That’s about $1,200 each month.
“You’re not raising any prices, cutting any labor,” he said. “It’s just another thing right out of your pocket.”
Burt, who runs the restaurant with his wife, Kimberly, said that he had to lay off eight of his 20 employees when the freeze began. It was the second time during the pandemic he had to do so. ....
