Could environmental pollution from industry contribute to cryptorchidism increase?

Credit: Human Reproduction
Environmental pollution from industries such as coal mining and metal works may play a role in the increasing numbers of boys born with undescended testicles, according to a study published today (Wednesday) in
Human Reproduction [1].
The researchers stress that their findings are hypothesis-generating, cannot show that these industries cause cryptorchidism and that further, targeted research is required. However, the study of nearly 90,000 boys is the first to describe at a national level a recent increase in incidence of the condition over time and to identify clusters of cases in parts of France that are former mining or metal-working areas, such as the Pas de Calais in northern France. The boys all had operations to correct undescended testicles between 2002 and 2014 when they were younger than seven years. ....

An estimated 14,480 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Cases that could be prevented or cured with better education from screening to treatment based on improved provider-patient communication, says a Michigan State University researcher.
The issue is particularly acute for Black women, said Sabrina Ford, an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology within MSU s College of Human Medicine. Ford s research was published online Feb. 1 in the journal ....

AI method can detect precursors to cervical cancer

Credit: Ulf Sirborn
Using artificial intelligence and mobile digital microscopy, researchers hope to create screening tools that can detect precursors to cervical cancer in women in resource-limited settings. A study led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden now shows that AI screenings of pap smears carried out with portable scanners were comparable to analyses done by pathologists. The results are published in the journal
JAMA Network Open.
Our method enables us to more effectively discover and treat precursors to cervical cancer, especially in low-income countries, where there is a serious lack of skilled pathologists and advanced laboratory equipment, says corresponding author Johan Lundin, professor at the Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet. ....

Propylparaben exposure during pregnancy may reduce protection against breast cancer

 E-Mail
WASHINGTON Low doses of propylparaben an estrogen-like chemical used as a preservative in personal care products and foods can alter pregnancy-related changes in the breast in ways that may reduce the normal protection against breast cancer that pregnancy hormones convey, according to a new study being published in the Endocrine Society s journal
Endocrinology.
These results, from an animal study that also will be presented at ENDO 2021, the Endocrine Society s annual meeting, lend evidence that propylparaben is an endocrine-disrupting chemical, the researchers say.
An endocrine-disrupting chemical interferes with the actions of hormones in the body. These chemicals can affect hormone-sensitive organs such as the mammary gland, the milk-producing duct in the breast, said the study s senior author Laura N. Vandenberg of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. ....
