Young Buckingham artists have work chosen for prestigious Royal Academy exhibition

Unicorn by Evie Harrison
Three art students from the Royal Latin School have had work accepted for the prestigious Royal Academy Young Artists Summer Exhibition.
The Young Artists’ Summer Show is an open-submission exhibition for students aged five to 19 studying in the UK and British schools overseas. Artworks are judged by artists and art professionals, with selected artworks displayed online and at the Royal Academy of Arts, in London s Piccadilly.
The Royal Latin submitted 113 works by students across the school, thanks to the hard work of art teacher Anna Woodham, and an amazing four entries have been accepted for this year s exhibition - out of more than 33,000 submissions in total. The entries will be displayed online from July 13. ....

Eli Broad, an unexpected—and often unreasonable—arts patron

Many people in the art world wish that contemporary art were taken more seriously by the rest of society, by people in different fields who are not even drawn to art. They dream about politicians, policy makers, educators and philanthropists alike recognising its value.  They have been dreaming, maybe without ever realising it, about Eli Broad, the self-made homebuilding billionaire who was, until his death on 30 April, Los Angeles’s most prominent arts patron without exhibiting any particular affinity for or sensitivity to visual art.
To be fair, he was a dedicated art collector, buying thousands of works by major artists over the course of several decades and ultimately building a museum in Los Angeles, the Broad, to showcase them. He clearly appreciated contemporary art as a financial investment, as a philanthropic tool and as a public good that could play a dynamic role in revitalising cities, including his beloved downtown Los Angeles. ....

Visual Journaling | Communication Arts

By Travis Young
Congratulations on the launch of Film Xchange! What was the inspiration behind this project? Film Xchange (Filmx) was inspired by my personal love of film and what it did for my mental health. I was struggling with depression my whole life, and it went unchecked for an extremely long time. I started going to therapy after my second suicide attempt, when I was 28. My therapist recommended that I try journaling to help me be more present in my life. I didn’t have the verbiage or understanding to talk about my emotions, so I used a camera as a way to journal anytime I thought I felt an emotion. But I realized that looking at the back of a digital camera took me out of the actual moment, so I switched over to film. When I started developing and scanning the images myself, it allowed me to start a conversation with myself and actively participate in my own life instead of just watching it go by. I wanted to share that feeling with others and give people the opport ....

Cindy Sherman | American photographer

Sherman grew up on Long Island, New York. In 1972 she enrolled at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and majored in painting, later switching her major to photography. She graduated from SUNY in 1976 and in 1977 began work on
Untitled Film Stills (1977–80), one of her best-known series. The series of 8 × 10-inch black-and-white photographs featuring Sherman in a variety of roles is reminiscent of film noir and presents viewers with an ambiguous portrayal of women as sex objects. Sherman stated that the series was “about the fakeness of role-playing as well as contempt for the domineering ‘male’ audience who would mistakenly read the images as sexy.” She continued to be the model in her photographs, donning wigs and costumes that evoke images from the realms of advertising, television, film, and fashion and that, in turn, challenge the cultural stereotypes supported by these media. ....
