Metro committee approves proposed budget that maintains current service levels, delays Silver Line Phase 2

If Metro’s board of directors adopts the proposed Fiscal Year 2022 approved by its finance and capital committee yesterday (Thursday), the start of service on the second phase of the Silver Line will officially be delayed until next year.
The $4.7 billion operating and capital budget moves the start date for Silver Line Phase 2 from July 1, 2021 as stated in the FY 2021 operating budget to January 2022 at the earliest, citing the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority’s expectation that it will be ready to hand over the project to Metro by Labor Day.
The budget also defers an additional $43.1 million subsidy contribution to the project until FY 2023, though $20 million will still be included in FY 2022 “to mitigate Silver Line Phase 2 service equity impacts,” according to the budget summary. ....

Two new reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that new coronavirus variants could lead to a rapid rise in the numbers of Covid-19 cases.
In one report released Wednesday, researchers from the CDC and Minnesota health department detailed cases of the B.1.1.7 variant, first identified in the United Kingdom. Earlier modeling data suggested this variant, which may be more transmissible, could become the predominant variant in the United States in March, and the CDC has urged people to take action to reduce spread. ....

Sterling, Virginia - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Washington Dulles International Airport arrested a Nebraska man Friday on a warrant related to charges of three counts of first degree sexual assault of a child.
Officers arrested Kokou Domkpo, 42 years old, a Togolese national and United States lawful permanent resident living in Omaha, Nebraska, before he boarded a flight to Ethiopia. Dompko, was wanted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Omaha.
CBP officers confirmed that the Douglas County warrant remained active and verified Domkpo to be the subject of the arrest warrant. ....

Silver Line Phase II On Track Despite Metro Financial Concerns

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every facet of the world including Metro planning, but officials say the construction phase of Phase II of the Metro Silver Line has managed to stay on track.
Marcia McAllister, the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project Communications Manager, noted that Phase II is 99 percent complete. McAllister shared the update during the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Metro Monday Jan. 25 virtual meeting about COVID-19’s financial impact on Metro and the Silver Line.
“COVID has had very little effect on our construction,” McAllister said. “As you know, construction workers were allowed to continue to work and they did work, and our contractors have put in extra hours to make up any time they may have (needed) when they may have had cases of COVID.” ....
