India, US to revamp Strategic Energy Partnership

A spike in the prices of crude oil, especially after the producer cartel Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) has forced India to revamp its Strategic Energy Partnership (SEP) with the United States.
Towards this, India’s minister of petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday held a virtual meeting with US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.
While the meeting was only introductory, both leaders agreed to revamp the India-US SEP to reflect the new priorities of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden with focus on promoting clean energy with low-carbon pathways and accelerating green energy cooperation. ....

FFCRA Extensions Under the American Rescue Plan Act

On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed into law the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which extends and expands several provisions of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA).
Tax Credit Extensions
As employers will recall, the FFCRA tax credit had been extended through March 31, 2021 to qualifying employers that voluntarily chose to continue to provide Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL) or Emergency Paid Family Leave (EPFL). The ARPA has now extended the FFCRA from April 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021.
Emergency Paid Sick Leave and Emergency Paid Family Leave Extensions
Under the ARPA, employers are eligible for the tax credit if employers voluntarily provide employees up to 80 hours of EPSL from April 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021. This includes employees who have already used their 80 hours under the FFCRA, essentially creating a refresh of EPSL for all employees. ....

DOJ requires divestitures for Republic's acquisition of Santek, Kinderhook main buyer

The U.S. Department of Justice s Antitrust Division (DOJ) and the Alabama attorney general s office filed a civil suit against Republic Services yesterday, seeking divestitures across Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas in order to approve the company s pending acquisition of Santek Waste Services.
A proposed settlement would see two landfills, two transfer stations, four collection facilities and multiple small container commercial waste (SCCW) collection routes in the Southeast sold to Kinderhook Industries or an approved acquirer. The private equity firm s local portfolio companies include Capital Waste Services and EcoSouth Services. Certain Texas collection routes would also be sold to Waste Connections. ....

Cairn Energy to file lawsuits overseas to implement $1,2 bn arbitration award against India

UK s Cairn Energy Plc, which secured an arbitration award overseas against the Government of India’s enforcement of a Rs10,247-crore tax claim on the company, is planning to bring lawsuits in the US and other countries to force the Indian government and companies owned by it, in the oil and gas, shipping, airline and banking sectors, to seize their overseas assets to recover $1.2 billion ordered by an international arbitration tribunal.
The firm has moved courts in the US, UK, Canada, France, Singapore, the Netherlands and three other countries to register the December 2020 arbitration tribunal ruling that overturned the Indian government s Rs10,247 crore demand in back taxes and ordered New Delhi to return $1.2 billion in value of shares it had sold, dividends seized and tax refunds withheld to recover the tax demand. ....
