NEWTON, MA — A well-known 77-year-old Trader Joe's employee was fired after she sold beer to a family member who was not yet 21. Now, with no job and no way to support herself amid the pandemic, the community is rallying to help support her.
Once the fundraiser went online, people rallied. In three days, more than 350 people have donated more than $36,000 via the online fundraising platform GoFundMe.
"A simple serious mistake has left [Gloria Cocuzzo] 'sick' and 'about to shatter' and without hope," Deanna Miller, who organized the fundraiser, wrote.

Brookline restaurant buzz: Brothers changes hands, Blue Bottle opens

Wicked Local
Is Brothers Restaurant gone for good? What’s moving into the former Toichi Ichiban? Who’s Blue Bottle, and what do they sell?
Here’s the local restaurant buzz around town:
Vello Restaurant and Bar, 404 Harvard St.
After changing hands earlier this year, Brothers Restaurant is getting a new name and menu.
The JFK Crossing staple, known for its breakfast and brunch offerings, will now be called Vello Restaurant and Bar. The owners originally planned to keep the Brothers name, but wanted something that would reflect the restaurant’s new Latin-leaning theme, attorney Frank Ravinal told the Select Board last week.

Brookline town election: Contested races shaping up

Wicked Local
While it’s still early in Brookline’s town election season — with months to go before voters will head to the polls May 4 — some races are already looking to be contested.
Here’s the latest information from the Town Clerk’s office, which releases updates every Friday:
How do you run for office in Brookline?
To obtain nomination papers, contact the Town Clerk’s office at 617-730-2010 and make an appointment. Those running for Town Meeting will need 10 certified signatures, while candidates for townwide office will need 50 (no, electronic signatures don’t count).
Incumbent Town Meeting members can also file an Assent to Election form with the town clerk to get their names on the ballot without having to obtain nomination papers. This form is due by March 9.

Brookline official threatened after comments on Trump, police

Wicked Local
After watching disgruntled supporters of former President Donald Trump storm the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, Select Board member Raul Fernandez questioned whether there’s room in law enforcement for anyone who still backs Trump.
Fernandez’s comments came during a Jan. 12 Select Board meeting, and for a week afterward, all was quiet. Then the messages and calls began pouring in.
According to Fernandez, some used slurs targeting his Latinx heritage; one threatened to burn down his house with his family inside. All expressed support for the police.
“Blue Lives Matter more than your life matters,” one of the messages read, according to Fernandez.

Brookline business vacancies hit new high amid COVID

During the pandemic, though, businesses’ needs were more apparent than ever.
“After the world changed in March, we knew that regardless of what the 2020 vacancy rate would tell us, that special interventions and extraordinary measures would be needed to be taken to help our Brookline businesses survive and recover from the unprecedented toll of the pandemic,” Brewton said.
With that in mind, Brookline’s economic development team was surprised the vacancy rate wasn’t higher, Mooney said.
However, she predicted a higher number of business closures in the first half of 2021. By late spring or early summer, the town expects to conduct another vacancy survey, by which point the rate will be a more accurate reflection of the pandemic’s impact on local businesses, Mooney explained.

Brookline's NETA looking to open medical marijuana dispensary on Route 9

Wicked Local
New England Treatment Access is considering moving its medical marijuana operations further down Route 9, dispensary representatives said at NETA’s license renewal meeting Tuesday.
Currently housed at 160 Washington St. in Brookline Village, NETA — which sells both medical and adult-use marijuana — is looking to move its medical operations to 1280 Boylston St., NETA attorney Jennifer Dopazo Gilbert told the Select Board.
NETA opened in Brookline as a medical marijuana dispensary in 2016 and began adult-use sales in 2019. The company also has a location in Northamption. The proposed building on Route 9 would be a good site for serving medical patients, especially given the abundance of parking, Gilbert said.
