Mammoth DNA Breaks Record for World's Oldest Sequence

The First Example of Hybrid Speciation in Ancient DNA
The new study has also amplified the ability for researchers to track the evolutionary process of speciation – the formation of new and distinct species. A
Nature press release states that this process generally occurs “over time periods that are thought to be beyond the limits of DNA research.”

Nonetheless, the scientists’ study of the mammoth DNA suggests that there was not one, but two different lineages of mammoth alive during the Early Pleistocene in the region of what is now eastern Siberia. Adycha and Chukochya are believed to be members of a species that spawned the woolly mammoth, but Krestovka appears to come from an unknown, and possibly entirely new, mammoth lineage. Tom van der Valk, the study’s lead author and a bioinformatician at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, explains the ....

It is being called the Big Freeze as abnormal winter snowstorms and freezing temperatures cut a crippling swathe through large parts of the United States.
The southern state of Texas is, for the first time ever, blanketed in snow paralyzing the state s electricity grid, causing deaths and filling hospital beds already struggling with COVID-19 cases with dozens of people suffering from hyperthermia. ....

Huge pits forming in Arctic permafrost : Environment, Weather & Climate - Page 7 - Peak Oil News and Message Boards

OK, I will concede that methane, like water vapor, is a powerful GHG, and that both are worse than carbon dioxide. But we know that the N polar icecap has flat out disappeared during past interglacials, and that both the polar bears and the humans - anyways our hominid precursers, survived just fine. The permafrost must have melted then, too.
Is it any worse today than then? We still have ice up North, and we still seem to be at least 10 degrees C below the peak Climatic Optimum temperatures in the fossil/ice core/tree ring records. ....

Scientists Have Sequenced Mammoth DNA That's Over a Million Years Old

Scientists Have Sequenced Mammoth DNA That s Over a Million Years Old
17 FEBRUARY 2021
In a feat right at the limits of our scientific capabilities, an international team of geneticists has recovered and sequenced the oldest DNA to date.
From the teeth of three ancient mammoths that roamed Siberia between 700,000 and 1.2 million years ago, the researchers extracted extremely degraded DNA, and pieced it back together to reveal a previously unknown genetic mammoth lineage.

Previously, the oldest recovered DNA sample was from a horse bone found in the Yukon permafrost, dating back to between 560,000 and 780,000 years ago.
This DNA is incredibly old, said evolutionary geneticist Love Dalén of the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Sweden. The samples are a thousand times older than Viking remains, and even pre-date the existence of humans and Neanderthals. ....

It s not quite Jurassic Park, but scientists have successfully extracted and reconstructed million-year-old DNA from mammoth teeth and solved a couple of mysteries about the creatures evolutionary history along the way.
