Community outraged by pelican slaying

An announcement asking for help in identifying two men suspected of cutting a pelicanâs gullet and then pulling the tissue over its head in the Upper Keys has sparked considerable attention to the situation since being posted last week.
State wildlife officers released surveillance footage on Facebook of two suspects who allegedly maimed the bird on the evening of March 8 at the Tea Table Relief Bridge in Islamorada. The two men appear to be carrying fishing poles in the video.
Passersby saw the bird and alerted authorities. It was brought to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center in Tavernier and euthanized. The rehabilitation centerâs executive director, Jordan Budnik, said that was all that could humanely be done for the animal. ....

For years, residents of the Southeast Alaska fishing town of Pelican decried cuts to state ferry service that left them increasingly isolated.
Then came news of a deadly pandemic spread around the world by travelers.
“Everybody claims that it’s so hard to get in and out of here. I say, that’s perfect,” said Walt Weller, Pelican’s mayor. “There is no better time to be stranded in the middle of nowhere.”

JUNEAU A man in a pickup truck was arrested after the state transportation department said he sped past boarding lines to get onto a state-run ferry Wednesday in Juneau and was heard by crew “muttering about a bomb and firearms.”
The Juneau Police Department said the man did not have a ticket and “made a comment about a bomb” when confronted by ferry employees at the Auke Bay terminal. The police department, in a statement, said the comment was not a direct threat and the man did not say he had a bomb. But it said the comment created concern. ....
