Cambodia adds human trafficking lessons to schools

PHNOM PENH (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - School students in Cambodia will learn about the dangers and laws around human trafficking from an updated syllabus starting in 2021, officials said.
The Southeast Asian country - which faces U.S. sanctions if it does not improve its record on human trafficking by next year - will add lessons for primary and high school students, a spokesman for the education ministry said.
“Hopefully, students learn about the ways to stop human trafficking in school and among youths,” Ros Soveacha told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Sex trafficking will be a specific focus of the new lessons, which will also cover drug offences and other crimes, he said. ....

BAAN SUAN KONG, Thailand (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Even as a young girl, Khairiyah Ramanyah knew that the idyllic coast she lived on in southeast Thailand was increasingly at risk from development that threatened her fishing community.
Khairiyah, 18, is now something of a local hero having led protests against a proposed industrial zone that she and other activists fear will devastate the coast, their homes and their livelihoods and that is now under review.
Authorities say the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Chana district in southern Songkhla province will include a deep-sea port, power plants and industries on nearly 7,000 acres (11 sq miles) of land and will generate about 100,000 jobs. ....
