PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. â Largo and Belleair police departments are stepping outside of the box to handle mental health calls.
They re testing a new program that involves iPads and counselors. The program is called TRACES, Telehealth, Remote Access for Crises Evaluations.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Largo Police Department teamed up with Clearwater-based non-profit organization Directions for Living for a program that uses technology to help officers respond to mental health-related calls for service.
Direction for Living s TRACE program connects people who call the police for help with a licensed clinician using a video conference call with a tablet.
They respond to a call, if they believe that there is a mental health component to that call, they hit the button and a live counselor comes on and either works with the officer or actually hands the tablet to the individual, said April Lott, the president and CEO of Directions for Living. ....

Katica, 87, Belleair's longest-serving mayor, dies

BELLEAIR â Gary H. Katica, the longest-serving mayor in Belleair history, died Sunday, March 7, 2021, surrounded by loved ones at his home.
Katica was elected to the Belleair Town Commission in 2000 and elected mayor in 2007, a position he retained until his passing.
He announced he had Parkinsonâs disease in January 2020. He attended some commission meetings remotely via Zoom after the outbreak of COVID-19 limited in-person participation, but had not participated remotely since October.
âI will miss him dearly,â Town Manager JP Murphy told Tampa Bay Newspapers. âMy whole career here in Belleair (16 years) Gary was always on the commission. He always held a deep empathy for people and cared so much about this little town. He always knew how to let people know how important they were and that their happiness mattered to him. Three candidates vying for two Belleair Town Commission seats

BELLEAIR â Three candidates are vying for two at-large Town Commission seats in the March 9 election. Commissioner Michael Wilkinson will become mayor; he ran unopposed to replace Mayor Gary Katica, who is retiring after more than 20 years in public service in the city.
One candidate will fill Wilkinsonâs seat. The other winner will replace Deputy Mayor Karla Rettstatt, whose term is ending.
The town faces several major decisions as the new candidates vie for seats, such as whether to invest more than $10 million in a new reverse osmosis water supply system or link to Pinellas Countyâs water system. Belleair would have to disband its water department if the commission approves the county plan. ....

Belleair produces first strategic plan for managing the future

BELLEAIR â It is 51 pages long and required the participation of commissioners, the town manager, the townâs management analyst, department heads, employee surveys, as well as meetings and phone interviews with community leaders, residents, and experts to produce.
It is the town of Belleairâs first strategic plan, a roadmap for identifying and solving issues the small town must solve â and the Town Commission approved it unanimously at its Feb. 16. regular meeting.
The strategic plan was unveiled through a virtual presentation with Angela Crist and Robyn Obdegard of the Florida Institute of Government at USF, who helped Belleair planners create the document. The strategic plan also provides a timeline for identifying, tackling, and resolving issues as well as measuring success. ....
