Why Do Some Mares Behave Like Stallions?

Though it s rare, mares can occasionally demonstrate behavior that people commonly associate with stallions acting aggressively, dominating herdmates and even teasing or mounting other mares. Dr. Patrick McCue tells the American Quarter Horse Association that there are several possible causes for these behaviors.
These include:
Ovarian tumors – The most common ovarian tumors are granulosa cell tumors. About 40 to 50 percent of granulosa tumors contain theca cells, which produce large amounts of testosterone and can cause a mare to act like a stallion. Testosterone levels will remain high until the mare has the tumor surgically removed. ....

HAMDEN, CT A 10-year-old boy missing from Hamden was found in Washington D.C. with his father on Thursday, according to police.
A Silver Alert had been issued for Brandon Pervis Jr. on Sunday. He was found at a hotel in Washington D.C. with his father and both appeared to be in good health and good spirits, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.
Smith said D.C. Metro Police subsequently took Pervis Jr. into protective custody.

Detective Patrick McCue of the Hamden Police Department Special Victims Unit conducted an exhaustive, extensive investigation, which led to the successful return of Pervis Jr., Smith wrote in a news release. The investigation is continuing. ....

Because mares have such long pregnancies, often lasting more than 11 months, they give birth later each calendar year if they’re rebred a month or more after foaling. Eventually they’ll have to stay empty a season to catch up. But breeding on the foal heat estrus occurring within 20 days after foaling can keep mares on a regular annual foaling cycle, said Patrick McCue, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACT, professor and equine reproduction specialist at Colorado State University.
However, mares are less likely to conceive on foal heat than subsequent heats, and they’re more likely to lose the pregnancy, said McCue, who spoke during the 2020 American Association of Equine Practitioners Convention, held virtually. So breeders and practitioners should make informed decisions based on the mare, her reproductive health, and her foaling history when deciding whether to breed on a foal heat. ....
