As Carbon Markets Reward New Efforts, Will Regenerative Farming Pioneers Be Left in the Dirt?

We Can't Talk About Regenerative Ag Without Talking About Pesticides

The opinions expressed here are solely those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the official position of the Sierra Club.
The last time soil health was perceived as a pressing public concern was at the peak of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. Now, for the first time in nearly a century, it has once again piqued policymakers’ interest as awareness grows that the ground beneath our feet is a crucial carbon sink, making the soil a potentially powerful tool to fight the climate crisis. Speaking at an Earth Day summit last month, President Joe Biden said, the “soil of our Heartland [is] the next frontier in carbon innovation,” reflecting the momentum behind an idea known as “regenerative agriculture.” But just as the nation is waking up from its long slumber about the importance of soil, new research shows that the pesticides so commonly used in American a ....

How carbon may become another crop for farmers

Folded arms and furrowed brows
among frustrated farmers greeted former Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) at a National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) meeting in the mid-2010s.
Inglis was then a rarity among Republican legislators. He made his case for market-based solutions to mitigate the impact of human-influenced climate change.
On that day, though, not many farmers wanted to hear it.
“You could just feel the tension in the room, the feeling that this guy was full of it,” recalls Brandon Hunnicutt, a Giltner, Nebraska, farmer, who is involved with several NCGA boards.
Many farmers skeptically view the concept of climate change. This skepticism, though, may be as much rooted in fear of government control as distrust in climate science, says Ben Riensche, a Jesup, Iowa, farmer.  ....

CIBO Impact Help Farmers Generate and Sell Carbon Credits

(Credit: Pixabay)
A new initiative has launched that is designed to help farmers generate and sell carbon credits from their regenerative farming practices on an annual basis. It also provides a marketplace for organizations and individuals wanting to offset their carbon footprint by purchasing credits directly from American farmers.
How it works
The new program, launched by CIBO Impact, promotes regenerative agriculture by making it simple for farmers to enroll their land and quantify carbon credits arising from sustainable farming practices.
CIBO Impact automates the verification of practices and credits using CIBO’s remote sensing and computer vision.
Once practices are verified, the credits are registered on the CIBO Impact marketplace where buyers can purchase carbon credits directly from the farmer. ....
