The passing of a $2.3 trillion spending bill means Plum Island is permanently off of the auction block.
A provision to block the sale of the 840-acre island was included in a massive spending bill approved by both the House and the Senate late Monday evening.
“It is very exciting news for our region that Plum Island is closer to a future of conservation, public access and hopefully a continued use of the state of the art research infrastructure,” Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said in an interview Tuesday. ....

The 2021 federal spending bill authorized by Congress Monday night includes funding for numerous projects to buffer the East End’s shoreline from storms and sea level rise.
The largest of these projects is the Fire Island to Montauk Point Reformulation Study, in the works for the past 60 years, which contains recommendations for $1.7 billion worth of work to manage tidal flooding, waves and erosion from coastal storms along 83 miles of the South Shore of Long Island. ....

In Southold, a revived call for solutions at Goldsmith Inlet
As Goldsmith Inlet continues to fill with sand in a fast-changing, dynamic environment, water quality has suffered.
Recent sampling in the area, which includes nearby Autumn Pond, shows poor oxygen levels, likely a result of limited tidal flow of seawater into the inlet. Fish can’t enter the area to spawn and high water levels in Autumn Pond threaten to introduce contamination from nearby septic systems.
Call it a case of dredging déjà vu.
“It fills up, we go and we dredge if possible, and then we wait for the next storm to close it in again, rinse and repeat,” said Glenn Goldsmith, current president of the town’s Board of Trustees. “We need more tools in the tool box,” he said, echoing calls from Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell for a more comprehensive solution to decades of problems. ....
