Pandemic, lockdowns, and unemployment dominated life almost everywhere in 2020. The LGBT community in Latin America and the Caribbean has been impacted by these crises disproportionately. And yet, LGBT advocates were able to achieve victories, even in countries with a poor track-record of openness to LGBT rights.
10. Wedding anniversary
In March, Mexico City celebrated the 10
th anniversary of marriage equality with a group wedding for 140 same-sex couples. The city also celebrated the 5
th anniversary of its gender identity law, which allows individuals to change their gender designation in official documents. In July, the city became the first jurisdiction in Mexico to formally ban conversion therapies (a comparable nationwide ban under discussion in the national congress was postponed due to the pandemic). ....

Bay Area Reporter :: Out in the World: Bolivian gay couple celebrate country's 1st civil union


David Aruquipa and Guido Montano last week became Bolivia s first gay couple to be legally recognized.
The lawyer and businessman were joined in a civil union ceremony December 11, five months after they won their two-year legal battle against the country s civil registry.
Bolivia s Constitutional Court sided with the couple in July.
Montano, 45, and Aruquipa, 48, sued Bolivia s civil registry when authorities refused to register their relationship in 2018.
Same-sex marriage is not legal in Bolivia.
The couple have been together more than 11 years.
In their administrative appeals, Montano and Aruquipa argued the denial of legal recognition of their relationship violated international human rights standards and discrimination under Bolivian law. ....
