TWU slams ‘dictator’ Qantas for imposing unilateral wage freezes
The Transport Workers’ Union has slammed Qantas for cutting more jobs and bypassing enterprise bargaining, announcing to the ASX that it will impose a two-year wage freeze on workers.
TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine called on the Federal Government to take an equity stake in Qantas over the mismanagement of $2 billions in public funding which continues to cost jobs and drag down wages and standards.
“Qantas management is acting like a dictator, using public resources to shore up its position, cut jobs and impose unilateral decisions on its workforce. There is a system of enterprise bargaining in place so that both sides can sit down and compromise. This announcement to the ASX flies in the face of enterprise bargaining and should ring alarm bells to the Government and investors that Qantas is out of control,” he said. ....

ANOTHER person slashed in unprovoked attack at Manhattan's Union Square station, second in two days

The victim, 54, was attacked in Union Square station on Wednesday at 10:10pm
Woman was slashed across her left shoulder, collarbone, and upper chest
Another victim was attacked on the L line platform in the station on Tuesday
The man was slashed in the neck with a pocket knife and blood was seen on floor
Both victims were taken to Bellevue hospital and are in a stable condition

Deliveroo loses unfair dismissal case after rider sacked for being too slow is ruled an employee

Decisions made by the Fair Work Commission can be appealed to the federal court.
In December last year, Uber settled a case before the full bench of the federal court about another unfair dismissal case involving a gig worker – thereby avoiding what would have been a landmark ruling on the status of gig workers.
The Transport Workers’ Union said at the time that it believed Uber settled because the company was facing defeat after a series of critical questions from judges in an earlier court hearing.
On Tuesday, the union’s national secretary, Michael Kaine, said the Deliveroo judgment “has huge implications for gig workers in Australia”. ....

Suspect, 18, in New York subway slashing spree 'was caught with a bloodied knife'

A suspect in Friday s terrifying New York subway slashing spree that saw four people randomly stabbed and a fifth sucker punched was caught with a bloodied knife and a victim s backpack, prosecutors say.
Joseph Foster, 18, was charged Sunday with first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree robbery and criminal possession of a weapon over his alleged role in the shocking attacks which left one victim blind in one eye.
Surveillance footage shows another victim trying to escape from a train before Foster allegedly dragged him back inside, according to Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Katherine Byrns, who suggested the attacks were part of a gang initiation . ....

Victoria to regulate gig economy

The Victorian Labor government will go it alone on changes to protect gig economy workers, including pushing for minimum standards and a dispute resolution process, ramping up pressure on the federal government and the digital giants to act.
Unions strongly back the move but agree with the platforms that changes must be led at the federal level, where Labor is promising to regulate the gig economy by establishing an independent body to deliver set minimum pay and conditions if elected.
