Jury Awards $7 Million To Three Veterans For Military Earplugs Hearing Loss | MedTruth - Prescription Drug & Medical Device Safety

May 5, 2021
By Carah Wertheimer
A federal jury has awarded $7.1 million to three army veterans who alleged that defective 3M military earplugs caused their permanent hearing damage.
Friday’s verdict bodes poorly for 3M, which now faces up to 240,000 similar claims from service members, veterans and some civilians in what’s now the largest mass tort in U.S. history.  The lawsuits claim 3M’s earplugs have caused constant ringing in the ears known as tinnitus as well as partial and total hearing loss.
Jurors in the first bellwether trial awarded $2.1 million in punitive damages to each veteran and a total of $830,500 in varying compensatory damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages. ....

3M defective earplugs case: Pensacola jury awards $7.1M in bellwether

A jury on Friday awarded more than $7.1 million in damages to three former service members from Kentucky and Georgia in the first bellwether trial of a massive and complex lawsuit against the company.
If the verdict stands and if similar verdicts are reached in more bellwether trials 3M could pay out millions to service members who used the Combat Arms Earplugs, Version 2 (CAEv2).
3M and its subsidiary Aearo Technologies sold the earplugs to the Department of Defense from 2003 to 2015, and they became the standard-issue earplug for troops serving on the frontlines of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The football-shaped earplugs were designed to block out all sound when inserted one way and allow spoken sounds through when inserted the other way. But according to the lawsuit, 3M withheld critical information on their proper usage from the government. ....

200,000+ US military personnel & veterans claim defective 3M earplugs led to hearing problems as first lawsuit goes to court

Follow RT on
More than 200,000 US service members and veterans who suffer from hearing issues are suing manufacturer 3M for allegedly supplying defective earplugs to the Pentagon. The litigation is one of the largest lawsuits of its kind.
The case involves the Minnesota-based company’s Combat Arms Earplugs, Version 2, which were widely used by troops deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2015.
The plaintiffs blame 3M for hearing loss and related issues, alleging that the firm was aware that the gear had problems, coming loose and not properly shielding its users from loud sounds. Due to the huge number of people involved in the suit, the claims have been consolidated in what is known as multidistrict litigation. The first trial, which combines the cases of three army veterans, has started in Pensacola, Florida and is expected to last through April. Two other trials are expected to take place by the end of the year. If any of the three cases ....
