Military history ships in New Jersey, Philly and Delaware

Lisa Marie Voit, Cherry Hill Courier-Post View Comments Whether you want to set sail on a Tall Ship, learn about military history or just enjoy dinner “on the water,” opportunities abound in the waters surrounding New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, which are home to many vintage and military ships. Each of the ships presents a great opportunity to experience life on (or under) the water. For those interested in military history, the Battleship New Jersey, the U.S. Navy’s most decorated battleship, offers a great starting point. Or, perhaps you don’t know the story of the Cruiser USS Olympia’s final journey, which involved bringing the American Unknown Soldier of World War I home from France?

The service areas will contain Hard Rock Cafe-style exhibits and artifacts, and an interactive Wall of Fame featuring a life-sized video monitor showcasing Hall of Fame inductees and their acceptance speeches, according to Gov. Phil Murphy’s office. Murphy said it’s part of a larger effort to showcase local heroes in a variety of fields at locations around the state, including Battleship New Jersey, the New Jersey Turnpike and Newark Penn Station. In addition to Gandolfini, star of HBO’s Sopranos, Doby and Bon Jovi, service areas will be named after broadcast journalist Connie Chung; Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston; Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison; author Judy Blume; Cuban-American singer Celia Cruz; and perhaps New Jersey’s most famous native son, Frank Sinatra.
