Study shows pharmacological rescue of mitochondrial defect related to Parkinson's disease

Study shows pharmacological rescue of mitochondrial defect related to Parkinson s disease
Treating mice that have a Parkinson s disease-causing mutation with a small molecule compound restores the removal of damaged mitochondria from their brain cells, shows a study published today in
eLife.
The findings may help explain what goes wrong in dopamine-producing brain cells in people with mutations that cause Parkinson s disease.
Parkinson s disease is caused by the progressive loss of brain cells that produce dopamine. This causes the hallmark symptoms of the disease, including tremors, rigid movements, sleep problems and dementia.
Scientists believe the death of these cells in people with Parkinson s disease is caused, in part, by the failure of a quality control mechanism that removes damaged energy-producing structures in the cells called mitochondria. This failure to recycle damaged mitochondria is detrimental to the health of brain cells. ....

Born and raised in Russia, in 2003 I graduated with Diploma (biology and chemistry teacher) from the Ulyanovsk Pedagogical University. During my undergraduate (1998-2003) and later MSc studies (2003-2005) at the Saint Petersburg State University, Russia, I was contributing to several research projects in the field of avian movement ecology and bird navigation under the supervision of the academic staff of the Biological station Rybachy with which I still collaborate. This research institution is remarkable for being the descendant of the world s first bird observatory Vogelwarte Rossitten (German: Bird Observatory Rossitten ) established in 1901 on the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea - a hot spot for bird migration in Europe. Now it is a branch of the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences and one of the leading centres studyi ....

Commuting patterns could explain higher incidence of Covid-19 in Black Americans

 E-Mail
The disproportionately high Covid-19 infection rates observed in Black Americans could be linked to their daily commuting patterns, according to a new study published today in the
Journal of the Royal Society Interface.
The research found that increased exposure to other ethnic groups, for example as a result of an individual s job or use of public transport, can result in the emergence of an infection gap in the population, such as the abnormally high incidence of Covid-19 recorded in Black Americans.
In some areas of the US Covid-19 incidence in Black Americans can be up to three to five times higher than would be expected based on population data. Previous studies have highlighted socio-economic factors including lower income and poorer access to healthcare facilities could play a role in this infection gap but these factors alone cannot completely explain the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Black Americans. ....
