OSHA Issues Proposed Update to Hazard Communication Standard -- Occupational Health & Safety

The proposed update to OSHAâs Hazard Communication Standard was issued on Feb. 5.

OSHA issued a proposed rule to update its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) on Feb. 5.
Potential changes to the HCS include adjustments to hazard classification, labels and information and training. The hazard classification aspect would provide specific criteria for classification. Labels would be required to include a harmonized signal word, pictogram, and hazard statement for each hazard class and category.
The rule was proposed for the purpose of aligning with the seventh revision of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The agency thinks that an update to the HCS would increase worker protections and reduce the incidence of chemical-related occupational illnesses and injuries. Information on labels and Safety Data Sheets for hazardous chemicals would be improved upon. ....

The Trump administration is pushing to get rules designed to allow discrimination disguised as ‘religious liberty’ finalized before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, which will occur on January 20, 2021.
Protests are growing against three far-reaching Trump policy initiatives that could foster discrimination in a variety of federal programs with protection offered to offenders in the name of religious liberty.
The separate, yet connected church-state debates are “definitely related in the sense it’s part of the administration’s effort to expand religious exemptions and to license discrimination based on religion,” said Lindsey Kaley, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union’s Center for Liberty. ....

44 Civil Rights Organizations Call on EEOC to Withdraw Proposed Update Undermining Non-Discrimination Protections
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Human Rights Campaign, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the National Women’s Law Center submitted a comment on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) Proposed Updated Compliance Manual on Religious Discrimination, which would undermine employment protections for women, people of color, LGBTQ people, people who adhere to minority religious or are non-religious, and those from other minority populations.
In response to the Proposed Update, the groups issued the following joint statement:
