While more people are eligible to get one of the COVID 19 vaccines in Clatsop County with the addition of those 65 years and older on March 1st, there isn t enough vaccine to serve everyone. In a news release, the county states that there are still those in the first groups to qualify that haven t had a first shot much less a second dose.
Individuals age 80 and over were declared eligible for vaccination by the state on Feb. 8. Eligibility was extended to those 75 and older on Feb. 15, to those 70 and older on Feb. 22, and, on Monday, March 1, to individuals 65 and older. ....

A familiar face is stepping into the top post at the Clatsop County Public Health Department.
Margo Lalich has been tapped to serve as interim director of the department following the departure of Michael McNickle, who is stepping down to head the Gray’s Harbor County, Wash. health department. She will join the county on March 1.
Lalich served with Clatsop County Public Health for 15 years beginning in 1998, when she joined as a public health nurse. She coordinated public health programs including the county’s HIV/AIDS case management, immunization, WIC, and other services. She served as the lead public health preparedness coordinator. In 2009 she was selected as Public Health Director and held that position until 2013. ....

Providence Health & Services gave early access to coveted COVID-19 vaccines to some members of its Oregon governing and foundation boards in December and January.
Lisa Vance, CEO of Providence Oregon, said the practice amounted to preferential treatment for insiders, some of whom are also donors.
The Oregon Health Authority said Providence’s actions didn’t meet the state’s guidelines for initial vaccine distribution. ....

Mental health agency plans new option for people in crisis

Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare hopes to open a rapid access center in Astoria, providing clinical help for mental health and substance abuse and potentially taking pressure off hospital emergency rooms.
Amy Baker, the agencyâs executive director, said the center will function similarly to an urgent care and serve adults and children. The agency plans to hire two clinicians to staff the center, along with a peer recovery ally.
People will be screened for help, regardless of their insurance or ability to pay, and staff will determine whether they need the agencyâs services or referrals to other providers.
âThe walk-in center is good for folks who canât wait for an appointment, for folks who struggle with scheduling appointments and keeping appointments and for people who are in that magical window of readiness to get help,â Baker said. âAnd you want to capitalize on that readiness.â ....

Vaccine for virus rolls out

The first batch of a coronavirus vaccine is expected to arrive in Clatsop County next week.
Oregon has received shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Another vaccine made by Moderna Inc. is expected to be given approval and distributed next week.
Boxes containing the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are prepared to be shipped at the Pfizer Global Supply Kalamazoo manufacturing plant in Michigan on Sunday.
