Police have been ordered to pay one of their own nearly $10,000 after their prosecution of his alleged domestic violence showed clear negligence .
Judge Kevin Phillips, who made the costs order, said police had been blinkered in their approach to the case, and expressed concern investigators ignored the advice of senior staff to pull the charges. ....

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to prison Monday by a Paris court which found him guilty of corruption and influence peddling, prompting many U.S. onlookers to suggest former President Donald Trump could be next across the Atlantic.
French authorities who were conducting several simultaneous investigations into Sarkozy used telephone wiretaps to uncover his offer to pull strings in order to help a judge obtain a prestigious job in Monaco. Journalists must be protected from prosecution in a much-needed overhaul of Australia’s Espionage Act 2018, according to a group of academics pushing for reform.
The University of Queensland’s Dr Rebecca Ananian-Welsh said the Act’s harsh penalties – including jail terms of life imprisonment – were having a “chilling” effect on public interest journalism.
“While no journalist has been prosecuted in the past three years, the threat of imprisonment for a national security offence looms, and is a huge concern for news companies, journalists, and their sources,” she said.
“The laws criminalise a very wide range of conduct which involves ‘dealing’ with information for the purpose of communicating it to a ‘foreign principal’. ....

Social media giant Facebook is yet to shut down sites inciting hatred and violence against the man charged with the murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher.
Victoria Police has asked Facebook to cancel about six sites, but Deputy Commissioner Tim Cartwright says the social media network operator has declined, despite fears that these sites could prejudice a fair trial.
