Beer Baron: New Wisconsin arrivals from Brooklyn, SweetWater and Old Nation

420 Extra Pale Ale by SweetWater Brewing, M-43 by Old Nation Brewing and Summer Ale by Brooklyn Brewery.
CHRIS DROSNER, FOR THE STATE JOURNAL
It’s been a lively spring for interesting breweries from outside Wisconsin joining the fray on local shelves. Here’s some recon on these new faces.
Brooklyn Brewery, New York
This brewery is one of the OGs of craft beer. Former journalist Steve Hindy founded Brooklyn in 1984, but the brewery is probably best known today as the home base for Garrett Oliver, one of the most influential voices in American brewing.
Brooklyn’s 27-year-old brewmaster in 2014 became the first brewer to win a James Beard Award and is one of the few African Americans in leadership positions in the industry. He was the editor of “The Oxford Companion to Beer,” the foremost reference book for beer history, styles and techniques and one I lean on often in the writing of this column. ....

Non-alcoholic beer, like Brooklyn Brewery s Special Effects, has seen huge growth in the past year.
Covid lockdowns are leading us to rethink our habits, while innovations have made NA beer tastier.
The global market for NA beer could be worth $29 billion by 2026, according to one prediction.
A few years back, Eric Ottaway was traveling in Europe when he noticed something about the way people were drinking.
Ottaway is the CEO of Brooklyn Brewery, one of the largest craft-beer outfits in the United States, so has an eye for such things – and what he saw intrigued him. Instead of knocking back full-strength beer, a surprising number of folks in pubs seemed to be choosing low-alcohol beverages.  ....

Core range and craft focus: Kirin Brewery sees fewer growth opportunities for happoshu and new genre beer
By Guan Yu Lim
Kirin Brewery is focusing on its core beer brands and canned craft beer business, amid a not-so-positive outlook for the low-malt happoshu sector and new categories following COVID-19 and a recent liquor tax revision.
Last year, Kirin Brewery saw sales decrease across its beer (-18.6%), happoshu (low-malt beer, less than 25% malt) (-2.1%), and whiskey, spirit and liquor (-10.8%) categories.
However, so-called ‘new genre’ third beer (non-malt beer), RTD (canned cocktails) and non-alcoholic beverages saw increase in sales by 4.6%, 12.3% and 10.4% respectively. ....
