Farm to cup: Indonesia’s ALKO brews plans to export blockchain coffee to China
Indonesia-based cooperative Alko Sumatra Kopi (ALKO) intends to export 100 tonnes of specialty-grade Arabica Kerinci coffee to China this year, paired with its blockchain technology.
Historically, China has been a tea drinking country, and while coffee consumption remains small, has been increasing over the years.
According to Daxue Consulting, per capita coffee consumption in China was 6.2 cups in 2018, raising to 7.2 cups in 2019.
In 2018, China imported some 84,000 tons of coffee beans in 2018. Its main imports come from Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, and US.

Senior-friendly future: South Korea lays out governance for elderly-friendly foods based on ingredient ratios
South Korea has finally laid out the governance rules for ‘elderly-friendly foods’ based on main ingredient ratios, with experts believing that this will have a significant impacts on a number of categories.
South Korea first created the elderly-friendly foods category in 2018, amending the local Food Code to establish this as a separate section.
Here, elderly-friendly food refers to foods manufactured and processed to have physical properties suitable to aid the elderly to eat or digest it, or to have nutritional profiles suitable for the elderly.
“[The elderly-friendly foods category has been established to] improve the convenience of intake as well as nutritional provision for the elderly, as this group may [face challenges] due to weakened chewing or swallowing or impaired nutritional intake due to this,”​ the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) said in a statement.

Balancing food safety and sustainability: Demand for secure, resealable packaging skyrockets amidst COVID-19 – Tetra Pak


The COVID-19 pandemic has driven up demand for food and beverage packaging that is secure and resealable as food safety and security concerns rise, according to a new report by packaging heavyweight Tetra Pak.
According to the Tetra Pak Index Report 2020 which surveyed over 9,000 consumers worldwide to assess current consumer concerns, COVID-19 emerged as the top concern (64%) when it comes to current consumer priorities in 2020, exacerbating concerns about food safety and security and beating out environmental sustainability concerns from 63% in 2019 to 49%.

South Korean supplement trends: Red ginseng and probiotics popular as 69% say they use health functional foods

Nearly seven in 10 Koreans said they had bought and consumed health functional foods last year, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) involving 1,500 men and women aged 19 and above.
The new data comes after the number of South Koreans consuming health functional foods has risen steadily in recent years.
In 2012, there were 50.2 per cent of South Koreans purchasing such product, which increased to 60.6 per cent in 2017, 63.6 per cent in 2018, and 67.6 per cent in 2019.

Novel perceptions: People with diabetes more willing to compromise taste and cost for healthier staple foods
People suffering from diabetes or have a family history of chronic diseases were more willing to adopt novel staple foods, compromising on taste and cost, compared to their healthier peers, according to a study conducted in Singapore.
The study found that taste and cost were key considerations for Asian consumers in accepting novel healthy staple foods, however participants with diabetes were more willing to compromise these for the health benefits.
Researchers conducted 11 focus group discussions, comprising 37 healthy participants and 22 participants with diabetes to explore attitudes and perceptions towards novel staple foods.

FAO on seafood strategy: Keeping fish affordable and preventing new sustainability crises tops agenda


The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is targeting seafood production improvements in the Asia Pacific region to keep prices affordable and prevent sustainability crises similar to those seen in land agriculture.
According to FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, fisheries and aquaculture have become even more crucial to global food security after the COVID-19 pandemic and is key to helping the world economy recover.
“We know that land alone will not feed us with abundant quantity and food diversity - we need Blue Transformation to secure Blue Food production," ​said Qu when addressing 34th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries earlier this month.

Philippines company Growrich Manufacturing is planning to expand the market for its virgin coconut oil (VCO) capsules due to the growing demand for immune-health supplements, and rising consumer interest piqued by government-backed studies into the ingredient.
Singapore has been identified as one of the potential markets for expansion.
The VCO hard gel capsules, also sold under the brand Growrich, has been selling in the domestic Filipino market for over the past decade.
In Philippines, VCO gained widespread attention last year as the nation’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced its plans​ to study VCO for reducing symptoms of COVID-19.
