Men and women with chronic mental illness keeping them from gainful employment and social activities are working their way to recovery through the Gainesville Opportunity Center. Brett Buell, co-director with Maggie Hanon at the center, said GOC is a community- partnership program where people whose lives have been drastically interrupted by a major mental illness come voluntarily to rebuild their lives and achieve recovery through work. They stay out of hospitals, and achieve dreams and goals of social, financial, educational and vocational independence. Established in 2007, GOC operated from an office space until this October when it moved to a sizable permanent house located at 1210 NW 14th Ave. Buell said the house offers opportunities to serve more people and offer more programs. ....
