Abu Dhabi Book Fair 2021: 14 key sessions to check out in person and online

From discussions on international literature and insights on the pandemic from doctors and historians to the UAE s future in the world and space, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair returns with a cultural programme fit for our times.
Running from Sunday
to
May 29 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec) the festival will have a hybrid model blending in person with digital events.
This doesn’t mean the fair’s physical venue will be devoid of its usual live sessions.
Running under stringent safety measures, including pre-booking and a negative PCR test for entrance, Adnec will host daily events featuring prize-winning authors, historians, poets and diplomats. ....

Renowned US authors Tayari Jones, Brent Weeks join Abu Dhabi Book Fair lineup


DUBAI: Renowned US fantasy author Brent Weeks, US author Tayari Jones, Emirati writer Eman Alyousuf and Kuwaiti writer Taleb Alrefai are all set to participate at the upcoming Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
Organised by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre at the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, the 30th edition of ADIBF will see the participation of more than 800 exhibitors from 46 countries around the world, and will comprise more than 104 virtual and physical sessions.
Dr. Ali bin Tamim, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, said: “Despite the challenges we have faced in the wake of the pandemic, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is committed to ramping up its efforts to support the publishing industry and to promote cross-cultural dialogue. The event is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and is organised by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.

Fantasy: medieval European influences and alternatives


Faeries, elves, centaurs, wizards, dragons. In its purest form, fantasy is one of the most ancient literary genres, and fantastical elements can be found in myths and folktales around the world. It is in fantasy that humankind encapsulated its need for escapism and wonder for the unknown. Despite the fantastical elements in those tales, fantasy in the form we all know differs and is much more recent. It has evolved in a more self-conscious way, encouraging individual interpretations of novelised narratives based in complex worlds. One of the most popular subgenres is what is known as “medieval fantasy” and is recognisable by its influences from the medieval European period, typically from western Europe. These influences include resemblances to western medieval monarchy, feudal system, warfare, and social structure, which are often permeated with a blend of magic and European folklore.
