From 2016 to 2020, Nigeria recorded approximately 1.6 million grams. It gold reserve has been estimated to be over 1 million ounces in Osun where detailed exploration and reserve estimation has been done.
Gold in Nigeria was dated back to 1913. Major gold occurrences are found at various locations in the schist belt of the country; Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Osun, Kogi, Oyo, Cross River and Kwara states.
Gold mining in Nigeria is predominantly carried out by licenced small-scale miners and informal artisanal miners.
Due to the informal component of gold mining activities, the exploitation of the resources in the country was associated with a lot of illicit activities that gave rise to insecurity. ....

In this interview, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-trained executive and highly regarded geologist discusses the activities of his Board, stating that ‘the ability of the Board to work with relevant stakeholders to give the SMDF a world-class structure is a key goal that will pave thebway for greater realization of government’s set goals for the SMDF and the entire mining sector.’
Mr Malami, who is certified by the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists, says the SMDF is working with the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) to sustainably exploit the abundant deposits of Calcium Carbonate in the country, adding that the Board will continue to strengthen its capacity to meet various demands that will pave the way for the development of the mining sector. ....

THE Christmas Day homily by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Dr. Mathew Hassan Kukah, has generated a lot of reactions from government and sectarian circles. Some of the reactions, particularly those by Muslim groups, are so harsh that one wonders if a fatwa is not about to be pronounced on his head.
Expectedly, Christian groups have risen in defence of him. Mr. Lai Mohammed, the Minister for Information was the first to fire the salvo. In his attack, which in my opinion is borne out of a deliberate obfuscation of facts in the service of defending the indefensible, Mohammed, speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, accused Bishop Kukah of stoking the embers of disunity, sectarian strife and calling for violent regime change of a democratically elected government. ....
