The April snowstorm hit Portage la Prairie and the province of Manitoba hard Monday with 15-20 centimetres of the white stuff accumulating over the two-day storm.
A special weather statement quickly turned to a snowfall warning Monday and Tuesday for several Rural Municipalities in the area including the RM of Portage, Cartier, Dufferin, Grey and Headingly. The low pressure system stalled over northwestern Ontario brought an additional 5 to 10 cm of snow Tuesday to bring the total to the 20 cm range. In addition, visibility in snow and blowing snow was terrible at times with northerly winds gusting to 60 km/h. ....

The Manitoba government released its kindergarten to Grade 12 strategy with a focus on putting students first, Education Minister Cliff Cullen announced, saying the Better Education Starts Today (BEST) strategy that will shift resources to the classroom while giving parents and guardians much more input, as it rebuilds Manitoba’s kindergarten to Grade 12 education system through the proposed putting students first bill.
“The strategy introduces a much-needed change to create a unified provincial education system that is accountable for results, classroom-focused, student centered and parent-friendly, leading to the most improved education system in Canada,” said Cullen. “We want students to graduate high school with the knowledge, skills and competencies they need to move into post-secondary education, the labour market, or whatever path they choose, and have the best opportunity to succeed.” ....

Blizzard conditions cause closures, power outages throughout southern Sask.

Extreme wind and snow wreaked havoc throughout southern Saskatchewan overnight, resulting in several closures and power outages on Thursday.
An Alberta clipper moved across the province on Wednesday night, creating blizzard conditions with winds in excess of 100 kilometres per hour, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
As of 4 a.m., Bratts Lake saw the highest wind gusts, reaching 143 kilometres per hour, based on preliminary ECCC data.
Regina set a January wind speed record, reaching peak gusts of 126 kilometres per hour.
ECCC said blizzard conditions are persisting throughout southeastern Saskatchewan, but are expected to slowly improve throughout the day. ....
