A physicist's journey

A physicist’s journey
A former student of Professor Riazuddin reflects on the physicist’s memoirs and the indelible mark he has left
The late Professor Riazuddin was an extraordinary scientist who also happened to be a quiet, gentle and humble man. To those who know him, he was also second to Professor Abdus Salam among Pakistani physicists. Quietly (like he did most things), he led the initial efforts in crafting the theoretical models for developing Pakistan’s nuclear capability.
His memoirs carry a similarly quiet and straightforward narration of facts. Unusual in a society that is far more inclined to taking to gloating and chest thumping, it is a first of its kind coming from a physicist who selflessly served Pakistan. For this reason alone, the editors are to be commended for compiling this volume. ....

Remembering the Life and Legend of Professor J N Islam

A kaleidoscope of memories shine in front of my eyes as I write this – memories of Professor Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam. Professor J N Islam, a Bangladeshi, was a prominent physicist and cosmologist in Asia as well as an internationally recognised and revered scientist.
I had the honour of knowing this eclectic and brilliant scientist during my childhood days, owing to the fact that he was my father s teacher and the PhD theses supervisor of both my parents. I had the good fortune of seeing him in close proximity. Notwithstanding the fact that I admired him a lot from the very beginning, it wasn t until I grew up that I realised what a significant figure he had been throughout his life and career. ....

The recent report, confirming the clandestine killing of a Baluch female activist named Karima Baloch, in Canada has sparked worldwide concern and execration. Karima Baloch had to flee Pakistan and take sanctuary in Canada in the face of a threat to her life. Pakistani secret service instrumentalists posed these threats because of her voice for the cause of the Baluch people. There exists cogent reason to believe that Pakistani undercover agents caused the killing. This news is very alarming indeed in that it depicts Pakistan agents can travel beyond its territory to cause heinous crimes. ....
