Editorial Stronger Together? Problems with Keir Starmer's latest pitch

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer
KEIR STARMER’S launch of Stronger Together, as Labour is calling its new policy package, faces a number of hurdles.
North of the border the title’s echoes of the ill-starred Better Together campaign, in which Labour teamed up with the Tories in opposition to Scottish independence, is guaranteed to invite mockery.
More seriously, Stronger Together’s central pitch that the Conservatives have divided the country, and Labour can bring it back together is superficial.
Press-released themes don’t put much meat on the bones, a motherhood and apple pie selection of soundbites: “Safe and secure communities,” “a future where families come first” and, vaguest of all, “Britain in the world.” ....

To Be Taken Seriously, Labour's Soft Left Needs to Do Much, Much Better on Yemen

Philippe Kropf/OCHA, Flickr
The debate over the future of the Labour party’s foreign policy has begun. Last week, the soft left grouping Open Labour published a pamphlet entitled A Progressive Foreign Policy for New Times, with a foreword co-written by Alex Sobel MP and the respected academic Mary Kaldor. The document’s launch event featured Sobel and shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy, in a significant show of support from senior party figures.
Co-sponsored by the Labour Campaign for International Development, the 29-page document reviews the party’s recent record, and proposes a way forward, purportedly rooted in the principles of humanitarian internationalism. So it was both striking and deeply troubling to see one issue conspicuous for its near total absence from the pamphlet: the war in Yemen. ....

New Times, Old Slurs

Mike Phipps
Open Labour have launched a new pamphlet, A Progressive Foreign Policy for New Times. It comes with a picture and quotation from Nelson Mandela on the front, below which it says in big letters “Beyond Corbynism”.
Surprisingly, given the academic credentials of the authors, Dr Harry Pitts and Professor Paul Thompson, there is a lot of sneering about the previous leadership, such as the reference to the “the magic spell of Corbynism’s invincibility.”  The authors accept the failures of New Labour interventionism in Iraq, but reserve most of their bile for “Corbyn’s anti-imperialist equivocation” and “outdated positions”. ....
