Foreword
This is the third issue of the Financial Stability Review (FSR) prepared in the context of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, with many euro area countries having faced a third wave of infections. As a result, a vast number of firms – particularly those in the services, leisure and travel sectors – still cannot operate normally, and the economy is still reliant upon policy support to prevent widespread unemployment, corporate insolvencies and economic contraction. The human and economic costs of the pandemic continue to accrue.
That said, vaccination programmes are progressing and offering a route out of the pandemic. Financial markets have been driven by expectations of an upswing, exemplified by a striking rally in global equity markets. We are optimistic that financial and economic conditions will bounce back. There is, however, a reality that the pandemic will leave a legacy of higher debt and weaker balance sheets, ....

LONDON (Reuters) – Global investors have flipped from ‘buy everything’ to ‘peak everything’ in a matter of weeks – but these manic mood swings may even out soon.
Stock markets appear to have run into the sand after several weeks of torrential inflows. By Bank of America’s reckoning the influx into world equity funds over the past five months exceeded that of the past 12 years combined.
Fears of ‘too much, too soon’ prompted many investment firms – including Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan – to warn in recent weeks of a possible 5-10% correction ahead.
This week’s tech-led shakeout – the second such wobble in less than 3 months – reinforced a whole host of those anxieties – everything from ‘peak’ business sentiment, earnings and output growth to ‘peak’ central bank largesse, excess liquidity and investment flows. ....

Time to pause? Wall St. grows wary of some stock bubbles
Wall Street is abuzz about stock market bubbles as surges in the share prices of some loss-making firms, red-hot public markets and amateur investors chasing stocks at frothy valuations spark fears of a pullback.
A flood of money supply, ultra-low or zero interest rates and COVID-19 vaccine rollouts have sparked a ‘buy everything’ rally, helping world stocks add a whopping $33 trillion in value from their lows of last March.
The euphoria is evident in the small cap Russell 2000 index where its component companies with a negative operating profit outperformed the wider index by nearly 50 percentage points over the last year, a Reuters analysis of Refinitiv data showed. ....
