April 30, 2021 The District 205 Board of Education has approved the purchase of the building that houses Northwoods Church and the Galesburg Area Vocational Center for a total of $1.3M. The district was renting space to house the GAVC from Northwoods Church as part of the renovation project at Galesburg High School. Currently, the district pays $5,400 a month to rent space in the building for the GAVC, and the rent increases every year throughout the term of the contract. Board member Maury Lyon says that the cost to rent the space for the GAVC would equal to half of the total purchase price once the contract had come to full term. That’s before possibly exercising an extension, adding an additional five years. Plus, the district now has the entire building to utilize instead of just a quarter of it.
April 7, 2021 The consolidated election from yesterday changed the makeup of several city councils, saw some incumbent mayors retained while others were replaced. District 205 was bound to see at least one new face on its board but after the votes were calculated, it looks as though two new faces will be coming to the school board. Two seats open for within Galesburg Township and two seats for out of the township. Inside of the township, Rod Scherpe was looking to retain his position on the school board, facing two challengers. It was a close one in the end, with Scherpe being the second-highest vote-getter in town to retain his seat. Pamella Bess-Tabb scored the most votes, getting 35 percent of the vote total.
GALESBURG — Students are now one step closer to a Feb. 22 return to the classroom in Galesburg District 205. Board members, the school union and administration agreed to a plan at the Jan. 27 special board meeting to return the district from hybrid learning into a full five-day class schedule, but some logistical issues have persisted. With lower availability of bus drivers this year, the district was unsure if they would need to postpone students' full return to March 1 as drivers were still getting certified. Monday, Superintendent John Asplund announced that they had enough drivers. There are a few more obstacles that the district will need to surmount in order to return.
