Nestled among the jagged peaks of the San Juan National Forest, the small town of Silverton, Colorado is known for its scenic vistas and old-time narrow gauge-railroad. But increasingly during the summer, residents say the town is gaining a different reputation – as an overrun destination with dust and noise from ATVs. Last week, Silverton’s Board of Trustees banned OHVs from traveling on town roads, which one elected official called the only solution to rectify quality of life issues. Plus, the West’s record-breaking dry conditions were the subject of a House committee hearing on Tuesday. Voluntary noise testing at Sand Flats; participants get free entry to recreation area

After months of hammering out new noise ordinances and determining testing protocols and decibel thresholds, Grand County will hold a voluntary vehicle noise testing event near the entry booth for the Sand Flats Recreation Area on Thursday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Local law enforcement officers and policymakers will use this event to practice procedures and collect data. No citations will be issued, and participating vehicles will get free entry into Sand Flats.
Both Grand County Sheriffâs deputies and Moab City Police Officers will use law enforcement grade sound metersâof which each agency now has twoâto conduct stationary sound checks on participating vehicles using a standard protocol that measures decibels at 20 inches from a vehicleâs tailpipe while the engine is revved to a specific RPM. Law enforcement officers will spend some training hours ahead of the event learning to use the equipment and follow the protocols; the event itself will serve ....

Getting a noise ordinance on the books was a challenge for local elected officials. Now that the county and city passed their ordinances, enforcing them is another hurdle. Today on the news, we speak with Grand County Attorney Christina Sloan about the three facets of rolling out the noise ordinances this year – data collection, law enforcement training, and education.
