May 17—Fort Worth school officials have pushed back a plan to bring broadband internet service to students in underserved parts of the district.
School officials plan to build towers across the district to provide public wifi access to neighborhoods where many students don't have high-speed internet service at home. In November, Fort Worth Superintendent Kent Scribner told the Star-Telegram he expected the first towers could be completed in six months if voters approved a property tax increase. But six months later, a district spokesman said last week the project is "currently on a new timeline" following the hiring of a new chief information officer in January.

Texas Mayoral Races, Austin Homeless Measure Among Key Issues On Saturday Ballots

May 1, 2021 at 11:32 p.m.
Austin voters reinstated a ban on public homeless encampments, according to The Austin American-Statesman. The paper reported that 57% of voters voted in favor of reinstating the ban, and 42% voted against it. Proposition B on that city’s ballot will also criminalize panhandling at certain places and during certain times.
Austin’s City Council decided to lift the ban on public encampments in certain areas in 2019, arguing that the policy had led to citations for people experiencing homelessness that hurt their ability to find housing. The move was quickly criticized by Gov. Greg Abbott, who promised to take action against Austin.

With just weeks until she returns to life as a private citizen, Price took time to speak with FOX 4 about the longest tenure of any mayor in Fort Worth’s history.
FORT WORTH, Texas - Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price is in a reflective mood as her time in office is coming to an end.
Price first ran for public office in 2000 and her decade-long tenure as mayor is wrapping up. In January she announced she would not seek re-election.
"I’m excited about it, but it’s also kind of sad to come to an end," she said.

Bars and restaurants prepare for busy week a year after first closing

“They’re trying to maximize all the losses they took in 2020,” Bragdon said.
Some wooden boards that went up last year won’t come down. Doors that closed temporarily at first won’t open again.
“Treasured business establishments that have sort of been family-run and locally operated, we've seen them closed forever,” said Kelsey Erickson Streufert, the Texas Restaurant Association’s Vice President of Advocacy and Government Relations.
The Texas Restaurant Association doesn’t keep a running list of closures, but, based on national data and local surveys, they estimate 11,000 restaurants and bars closed for good this past year.
A year later, the curve health experts asked the public to bend now looks like a rollercoaster with several peaks and troughs because that’s what life has been like this past year.
