North Floridians are drawn to the Aucilla Sinks because they’re unlike almost anything else in Florida, and a little mysterious. A trail winds past rocky pools and short streams lined with tall walls of limestone. What we’re seeing is bits and pieces of the Aucilla River. The river runs aboveground to the north and to the south of here, but I wonder- what happened to it in the middle? I wanted to know, so I invited geologist Harley Means for a hike.
We don’t associate Florida with large rocks. What Harley revealed to me, though, is that the Aucilla Sinks are in fact uniquely Floridian. It’s the Florida beneath us, exposed. ....

WFSU’s Mike Plummer shows us the fateful story of a World War II era B-17 bomber that crashed at Saint Marks on a summer day in 1944. The plane went down carrying a crew of ten men…only one airman survived. Long forgotten, the wreckage was rediscovered in 2011. A historic marker is now in place so the story of these men won’t be forgotten again.

Florida agency: Listing monarch butterflies as 'endangered' is warranted as population tallies fall

The monarch butterfly is in peril, but it will have to wait its turn before federal wildlife officials move forward with listing it as an Endangered Species.
There are 161 other species in line that are facing downturns in population, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which has found that listing the orange and black migrators is warranted but precluded because of higher priorities.
The butterflies, pollinators that rely on the availability of milkweed – its specific food choice, migrate globally but make their way in droves to the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge each fall.
A 12-month study, said biologist and USFWS Assistant Regional Director for the Midwest Ecological Services Lorie Nordstrom, found significant declines in both the eastern and western monarch populations. ....
