Scientists from the United Kingdom, France, and Morocco reconstructed this new species from “…two complete skulls and referred jaws.” Based on their reconstruction, the
Pluridens serpentis was believed to have measured as long as 8 meters (26 feet). This is staggering as the majority of the species’ relatives only grew to about a few meters in length.
It had “elongate and robust jaws, small teeth, and specialized tooth implantation” that would have helped it to catch small prey. Additionally, it wouldn’t have been able to see very far because it had such small eyes. According to the study, it probably “relied on nonvisual cues including touch and chemoreception during foraging, as in modern marine snakes.” ....

WESTBOROUGH On March 3, Midwestern University virtually hosted 73 of the country’s top high school students for the 22nd Annual Arizona Regional Brain Bee, an educational competition similar to a spelling bee that focuses on neuroscience.
The 2021 Arizona Regional Brain Bee at Midwestern University was presented in partnership with the BHHS Legacy Foundation.
This year, in recognition of COVID-19 restrictions, the Arizona Regional Brain Bee was held via an online Zoom meeting. Because other regional Brain Bees across the nation were canceled due to the pandemic, participants from as far away as Texas, New England and North Carolina were invited to join local Arizona students to test their knowledge of the human brain and how it governs human behavior, and the science that helps medical professionals understand brain function. ....

Anh-Tuan is a first-generation Vietnamese American, the son of Vietnam War refugees. His father is a veteran of the South Vietnamese Air Force and a political refugee; his mother fled the communist regime, a boat refugee.
His father, great uncle, and grandfather all served for the South Vietnamese military during the war, and their flight out of a turbulent Vietnam was a harrowing journey.
“They fled the day before Saigon fell,” Anh-Tuan said. “And every one of those on my mom’s side fled by boat.”
Three Tong family groups eventually arrived in Camp Pendleton, California, finally settling in Hutchinson as Minnesota was “the only state that would take all of them,” according to Anh-Tuan. In the 1990s, Anh-Tuan’s father moved to the Twin Cities area, where he and his mother met and were married. ....
